We chose to air our new Stress Solutions Summit during a very stressful time. December is a month when people are traveling more, purchasing more, dealing with cold weather, flus and sickness, and relatives that they may be able to avoid the rest of the year. The holiday season is a stressful time for many people.

We started our 2-week Summit today with one of the world’s leading experts on stress and pain management: Dr Norman Shealy.

Dr Shealy knew he wanted to be a physician at 4 years old, possibly be cause he has the word ‘HEAL’ in the center of his surname. By 16, he knew he was going to be a neurosurgeon. He recalls during our interview how in the 1920s they used neurosurgery as a last resort for pain management. After he completed his residency, he devoted himself to finding another way to manage chronic pain.

“I teach people how to mentally change sensations,” he says.

Once he read over 350 books on self-regulation, and synthesized the knowledge into ‘Biogenics,’ a system to control your emotional state and regulate your thoughts.


The techniques he teaches to trauma victims who have to deal with pain on a daily basis can be used by anyone dealing with stress.

Western Medicine vs Alternative Medicine

Dr Shealy is not your typical doctor. He was one of the harbingers of ‘alternative’ therapies, bringing ancient healing sciences into the Western medicine lexicon.

There is a place for drugs and surgery, Norm says, and in 15% of cases they can save your life.

In the other 85% of cases, alternative therapies can either heal you, or improve your symptoms, and they do not present the risk of side effects that is so prevalent with western medicine.

Norm says he would never, under any circumstances, take antidepressant drugs. “Their efficacy is minimal, and well over 50% of people get serious complications from antidepressants.”

Dr Shealy has elected to stay in the world of western medicine, however, so that he can discuss alternative therapies with medical boards, and provide them with answers they cannot find within the medical system.

If you find it absurd that a doctor can go through all of medical school without ever learning the basics of nutrition, and how food can heal or harm the body, then I’m sure you are just as glad as I am that Norm is still in the western medicine system. That is a form of treatment that doctors should be using!


Breathing Exercises and Guided Meditation for Stress Relief

Norm provides visualizations, acupuncture, and guided meditations to his patients.

He showed us 3 breathing exercises he recommends to his patients during the interview. Here is a quick overview:

When we asked him to create a package of specifically aimed to help people with stress relief, he put together a magnificent compilation of his work.

Combined with this, he is offering Aware Show listeners an “Air Bliss Roll-On,” an invention that combines aromatherapy and acupuncture.

“When I wanted to get ‘application of essential oils to acupuncture points’ approved, nobody would listen to me,” he said. Once he called it “transcutaneous acupuncture,” doctors started listening.

“You can have sex in a public square, if you know what to call it,” he said with a mischievous grin.
