Ocean and marine mammals are being very disturbed by a U.S. military program that, if approved, will soon be bombarding millions of whales and dolphins around the world with intense noise. The Surveillance Towed Array Sonar System (SURTASS) Low Frequency Active Sonar is a powerful system the Navy seeks to deploy in 80 percent of the world’s oceans. SURTASS is used to listen for noises produced by submarines, so it is called a passive sonar. Deafening noise from the LFA system will interfere with the vital biological activities of marine mammals. Scientists fear that long-term exposure to LFA could push entire populations over the brink into extinction.” Listen to the discussion today with our guests: Michael Jasney from the Natural Resources Defense Council, Katy Penland from the American Cetacean Society, and Robert Corsini, a documentary filmmaker.
